His birth date is variously given as March 30, 1888. He married Alvina L. Du Mond (also spelled "Dumond") on August 27, 1913, in Mower County, Minnesota. Alvina was born in 1892, and was the daughter of Frida Du Mond. In 1895, she was living in Carimona Township, Fillmore County, Minnesota, with her mother and siblings: Reuben, Alfred and Lillie. By 1910, her mother had remarried to August Hanning and they were living in Fillmore, Fillmore County (and Lillie is listed as "Phebe").
Alvina died in 1917 and Alfred later married Lena Ihns.
Alfred's death certificate incorrectly lists the maiden name of his mother as "Grothe."
Alfred had two known children with Alvina:
Virgil Roy, Born in Grass Range, Montana, February 12, 1916, died September 20, 1998, Rockford, Illinois. Virgil married Edith Amelia Jasper; and
Lucille Frieda Bastian Schultz Waterbury Iberlin, Memorial No. 20107628.
Alfred had four other known children:
Floyd Frank Bastian, born November 15, 1918, in Montana, died September 13, 1990, Mower County Minnesota, who ultimately lived in Austin, Mower County, Minnesota (his mother's maiden name is listed as "Ihns");
Alfred Carl Bastian, born 1919, Memorial No. 79826502, who married Ethel Mae Fisher, on July 4, 1945, in Mower County;
Eleanor Dorothy Bastian, born April 11, 1923, died September 9, 1982, in Mower County; and,
Violet Grace Bastian, who later lived in Austin, Minnesota, born December 25, 1929, in Minnesota, died May 21, 1991, in Mower County (on her death certificate her mother's maiden name is listed as "Bastian")
