Jacob Vester Akers, 85, 7220 Asbury Drive, formerly of 3300 W. 10th, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, at a Topeka hospital.
Mr. Akers started work for the Missouri Mercantile Co. of Kansas City, Mo., and in 1928 bought the Topeka branch and changed the name to Kansas Mercantile Co. He sold the business in 1946 and established a private accounting and income tax service.
He was born Sept. 20, 1898, at Richmond, Mo., the son of Jacob A. and Elizabeth Fields Akers. He attended Richmond, Mo. public schools and Chillicothe, Mo. Business College.
Mr. Akers was a member of First Baptist Church.
He was married to Ruth Walking July 3, 1925 at Topeka. She survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Evelyn A. Whitfield , Topeka; two sisters, Mrs. Inez Peterson, Kansas City, Kan., and Mrs. Aleta Enlow, Kincaid; two granddaughters, and a great-grandson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home. Burial will be in memorial Park Cemetery.
