Death: Jan. 17, 2010

Well-beloved wife of Macon Andrew Banner [1912-1983] and loved stepmother to Sarah and Macon Jr. Adored aunt to Judy, Nancy, and Norman Schaaf; Susan, Theresa and Annalisa Yarborough; and Tommy, Bobby, Mary Elaine, Matthew, and Steven Yarborough. Pep enjoyed an eventful life. Born in New Orleans and raised in McComb, MS, she spent the early years of the U.S. involvement in the Second World War in San Francisco, Cal., working for the Federal Reserve Bank. She returned South after the war. From 1949 to 1958, she worked for the custom dress shop Franklin's, first in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and then in Kingsville, Texas, where she was transferred about 1954 to run the new branch. In Kingsville, Pep met her second husband and life's love, Macon Banner. Pep became executive secretary for the Klebergs, owners of King Ranch, one of the world's largest. In the 1930's, the Klebergs had leased to Houston's Humble Oil company exploration and drilling rights on almost a million ranch acres, and Macon worked for Humble. The couple built a home just outside the town, where they lived until Macon's untimely death in 1983. Pep then moved for a time to Houston, to be near her brother Ted and sister Addie [aka Ann] Yarborough, but she eventually relocated to Austin, Texas to be close to her stepdaughter Sarah, who cared for her in her last years. Pep was the longest lived of her immediate family, almost reaching her 93rd. birthday. She was famous for her marvelous sense of humor and fabulous cooking. She was a wonderful aunt, who loved and protected without censure all of those around her. She is dearly missed.
