Dr. Max Eugene Austin, Sr., 76, of Tifton died Thursday, December 31, 2009 at Tift Health Care Center in Tifton. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 3, 2010, at 2:00 P.M. in the St. Anne's Episcopal Church with Father L Lacy officiating. Burial will follow at the Henderson Chapel Cemetery in Irwin County. Close family members will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at Albritton-Beaumont on Sunday afternoon from 12:30 - 1:30 P.M.
Born on July 17, 1933 in Pine Grove, Pa., Dr. Austin was the son of the late Russell L. and Hilda Hikes Austin and was preceded in death by his first wife and the mother of his children, Eleanor Mae Fessenden Austin, and his second wife, Betty Joyce Griffin Austin. He is also preceded in death by one sister. Dr. Austin earned his Doctorate in Horticulture from Michigan State University and was a retired professor of horticulture with the University of Georgia, where he worked for 21 years. As a world renowned blueberry specialist, he wrote many publications on fruits, especially blueberries, and traveled all over the world helping other countries cultivate blueberries. He was a member of the St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Tifton and had served in the U.S. Army.
