Son of James Findley and Susanna (Stum) Findley.

He married first on 1 Feb 1857 in Linn Co., MO to Sarah E. Pennington, who had been born about 1839 in Illinois.

In 1860, George and Sarah were living next door to his sister Susan and her husband Marshall Prather:

1860 census, Linn Co., MO, Bottsville Township, 58-TWP RANGE 22, p. 737
Geo. W. Finley, 24, farmer, $1,670, $480, IL
Sarah E., 21, KY
John L., 10 mos, MO

About 1867, Sarah died, probably in Jackson Co., MO or nearby. Her youngest child, Sarah, was born about that time somewhere in Missouri (probably Jackson Co.), while her son William was born about 1865 in either Kansas (as reported on the 1870 census) or Missouri (the 1880 census). George remarried on 20 Aug 1868 in Jackson Co., MO to Comfort Prewett [b. 19 Feb 1830, IL; d. 22 Oct 1913, Fulton Co., AR], the daughter of John Prewett and Elizabeth __.

1870 - George and Comfort haven't been found yet on the census, but they were probably somewhere in Missouri as shown by the birthplaces of their children. They may have been in Jackson Co., MO where they were married and where George's brother James lived, or they may have gone back to Linn Co., MO where George still had family. Others in Linn Co., MO seem to also be missing from the 1870 census, so that is likely where they were.

Two of George's children by his first wife Sarah, John and Jerusha, were living with his married sister Susan Prather in Linneus, Linn Co., MO:

1870 census, Linn Co., MO, Clay Township, Linneus, p. 269
Marshal Prater, 36, farmer, KY
Susan Prater, 30, IL
James Prater, 9, MO
George T Prater, 7, MO
John L Finly, 11, MO
Jerusa Finly, 9, MO

Little William was living nearby with his grandmother:

Susan Finly, 72, no real estate, $100 personal prop, KY
Mahala A., 30, MO

Sometime between 1876 and 1880, George and Comfort moved to Arkansas, where their son Charles was born in 1880. George's son William H. by his first wife, Sarah, is living with them:
