Former Durango resident Margaret J. Akin died at the Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos on Monday, Dec. 3, 2007. She was 86.
Known as "Peggy," she was born to Wesley and Leota Dunlap in Dolores on Aug. 21, 1921. During her early childhood years, she enjoyed living on her parents' cattle ranch on the Dolores River, where she was especially fond of riding her horse and playing with the kittens and rabbits.
Mrs. Akin began school in Dolores and completed her school years in Cortez, graduating from Cortez High School in 1940. While at CHS, she was active in music, playing piano and trumpet in the band, singing, dancing and acting. She developed a lifelong love of music and enjoyed attending concerts throughout her life, becoming active in the Community Concert Series in Durango and Cortez during her adult years. Mrs. Akin was also a member of Rainbow Girls.
Her family said she made many dear friends at CHS and stayed in touch with them throughout her life.
On June 16, 1941, she married James C. Akin in Aztec. They lived in Cortez and Dolores before moving to Durango in 1951.
The Akins were members of the Whirlaway Square Dance Club and also enjoyed round and country western dancing. Mrs. Akin was a member of Newcomers and enjoyed playing bridge.
After her children were grown, she worked as a bookkeeper.
"Peggy's main love in her life was her family," the family wrote, "and she was happiest when doing things with them. She was a wonderful cook, and meals were always a special family time in her home."
Mrs. Akin was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, James C. Akin, and infant son Robert Akin.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007, at Ertel Memorial Chapel, 42 N. Market in Cortez.
