OLLIE ROSE ELLIOTT ALBIN

Funeral services for lifelong area resident Ollie Rose Elliott Albin will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 5 at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at Cortez Cemetery.

Ollie was born February 23, 1922 in Altus, Okla. the fifth child of Alvin Johnson Elliott and Beulah Mae (Ford) Elliott. She passed from this life on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at 92 years old. Ollie was raised in Oklahoma, Texas and later Colorado. Ollie and her four brothers and one sister moved from Hub, Tex. during the great Dustbowl in the 1930's. They moved into the Lebanon area and lived in a tent house the first year. Then they moved into the Mildred area. There she finished the 8th grade of school. On the farm she helped with the chores milking cows, herding turkeys, and feeding rabbits and chickens. She and her siblings helped plant a large fruit orchard and helped cut and stack hay.

Ollie married in 1938 and had two children, Dixie Joyce Holman Veach and Ray Dean Holman. They lived in many mining camps where she learned to cook in the boarding house where they worked. She worked in many mining camps of the Mayday Coal Mine in the LaPlatas, Disappointment mines, Tom Boy Mines, and the Cimmeron Mines. With all this experience, she became a wonderful cook. She divorced in 1943. Ollie worked as a cook in most all the restaurants in Cortez. She later moved to Alamosa, Colo. where she worked in dry cleaners during the day and restaurants at night. There she met Orin Albin Jr. He had just come home from WWII. He had been a prisoner of war for 22 months. They married and moved back to the Mildred area in Cortez. For a while they farmed under the hill from the Mildred school and then both started working in town. Jr. worked in the NuWay Shoe Store and Ollie in the Vitakist Bakery and various restaurants. They owned and operated the NuWay Shoe and Repair in the late 1950's and early 1960's. They had a son, Elliott Bair Albin (Sonny) who passed away in 2007. In these years they lived in Montrose, Colo., Colorado Springs, Colo., Summerville, Tex., and Huntsville, Tex. then back to Cortez in 2008. Ollie loved to work and was always busy. She was a great cook, and loved to work in the garden and yard. Ollie loved to share her cooking with friends and neighbors, and loved to crochet doilies and afghans and give them away.

Ollie is survived by her daughter, Dixie Veach Foutz and husband, Loyd; four grandchildren, Casey, Kellie and Corey Veach, and Kim Claycomb Rider; and twelve grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Alvin and Beulah Elliott; brothers, Elmer (Fat) Elliott, Dick Elliott, Oscar Elliott, and Melvin (Slim) Elliott; one sister, Verda Ree (Snooks) Cerniwey; and two sons, Ray Dean Holman and Elliot Bair Albin. She will be missed by many.
