Roland P. Achen

Durango resident Roland P. Achen died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, in Albuquerque. He was 87.

Mr. Achen was born to Charles and Rose (Orstead) Achen on Dec. 15, 1924, in Los Angeles.

During World War II, he served as a pharmacist's mate in the Army.

On Jan. 24, 1948, he married Marjorie May Burris in Los Angeles.

After returning from his military service, Mr. Achen became a boilermaker and a member of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers. After his retirement from making boilers, he became an auditor.

Mr. Achen had a stroke about 20 years ago and had the use of only one hand, but his granddaughter Monica Pruett, who was his caregiver in his final years, said he was a "master super-gluer" great at taking things apart and repairing them.

He had lived in Durango for the last 15 or 16 years, Pruett said, and loved helping at Manna Soup Kitchen. Mr. Achen also participated in activities at the Durango/La Plata Senior Center.

He enjoyed going for drives and stopping at Subway for sandwiches.

Mr. Achen was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Marjorie Achen; and son Jim Achen.

He is survived by his children Rob Achen of California and Luanne "Lue" Achen of Utah; and four grandchildren.

Cremation has occurred. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
