Dr Ettore Bellini
Birth: Apr. 13, 1876
Foligno
Umbria, Italy
Death: 1943
Echavanne, France

Italian engineer and inventor. He attended engineering at the University of Naples, and in 1901 was hired as electrical engineer from the Royal Italian Navy. In 1906, he became head of the "Laboratorio elettrico navale" in Venice, where he was responsible for research about applications of radio waves to warships and submarines. He became a student and assistant to Guglielmo Marconi and later his collaborator in the first practical applications of wireless telegraphy. In 1906, Bellini was sent to France along with captain Alessandro Tosi of the Royal Italian Navy for an search about the hertzian waves propagation, project who was sponsored by Giovanni Agnelli and his company. During these trips he met and married a French woman and after marriage settled in France. In 1910, Ettore Bellini along with Alessandro Tosi invented the radio direction finder, a revolutionary device for finding the direction to a radio source, consisting of a antennas network and stations distributed throughout the territory that emit electromagnetic signals continuously translated by instruments aboard of aircrafts and ships to give the position and direction of the transmitting station. (bio by: Ruggero)
