In 1887, Erie Irene Johnson of Scott county Mississippi, daughter of William Henry and Julia Anette Moreman Johnson, married John Bester Cole. They moved to Greenville, Hunt county, Texas where their first three children were born; Robert Clyde (1889), Maude (1891) and Stephen Madison (1893). In 1895 the family moved to Navarro county where John became a merchant and farmer. Here were born their other six children, Mae (1896), Verna (1898), Henry Bester (1901), John Alan (1903), Lillian (1905) and Edna (1907).

Around 1915, John and Erie moved the family to Streetman from nearby Navarro county and he purchased the McConnico Mercantile Company which employed his oldest son, Robert Clyde Cole and it was renamed J. B. Cole General Mercantile. As time passed, the family became major stockholders in the local bank, First State Bank of Streetman, and in August 1921 the bank charter was changed and the bank became known as the First National Bank. John served as President of the First National Bank until his death in 1936.
