Henry C. Pritchett was the fourth president of Sam Houston Normal Institute (now State University) (1891-1908).
An 1873 graduate of Pritchett Institute in Glasgow, Missouri (founded in 1866 and named in honor of his uncle, Carr Waller Pritchett), Pritchett came to Sam Houston Normal Institute in 1881 as a Mathematics Professor and was later appointed to the position of State Superintendent of Public Instruction (1890). In August 1891 the State Board of Education elected him to be the principal of SHNI. During his presidency he supervised the construction of the Peabody Memorial Library (1902), the first separate library building for any Texas college.
Pritchett married Kate Smith on December 28, 1876.
The stained glass Service Window – containing the school's motto, "The Measure of a Life is its Service" – was dedicated in his honor and placed in the Main Building's Sam Houston Memorial Hall.
He was the older brother of Joseph Lucien Pritchett, university dean and professor.
