Funeral services for Harry C. Billings were held last Saturday afternoon from the Presbyterian church at Austin, Rev. N. S. Carpenter of Overton, Nebraska, had charge of the services and also of the short services held at the home preceding the church services.
Music was furnished by a mixed quartet composed of Mrs. Ethel Throckmorton, Mr. and Mrs. Tom McFadden and son Orrin.
Harry Clifford Billings, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Billings was born at Columbia, South Carolina, March 19, 1891. When he was about two years old the family moved to Lehigh, Iowa where he grew to young manhood. He was a World War Veteran, having served 18 months over seas as a member of the 342 Machine Gun Company of the 89th Division. He was gassed August 9, 1918, at the St. Mihiel drive as a result of this he was totally blind for 22 days. He was also shell shocked.
When he returned home from the war he worked at odd jobs until November 24, 1920, when he was united in marriage to Mrs. Ida Ogle. To this union was born one daughter, Virginia Ellen.
He joined the Presbyterian church in 1925. He was a member of the American Legion and of the Modern Woodmen of America.
For the past few years his health has been failing and on April 17, 1934, he was taken to the Veterans' Hospital at Sheridan, Wyoming where he passed away November 7, 1934, at the age of 43 years, 7 months and 18 days. Death was caused by pneumonia.
Besides his loving wife and his daughter, Virginia Ellen, he leaves a step-daughter, Miss Helen Ogle, and two children, Clifford and Georgina by a former marriage, four sisters, Mrs. Minnie Lindquist, of Lake Andes, S. D., Mrs. Elsie Longstaff of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Mrs. Lillie Rudekoff of Oberlin, Ohio, and Mrs. Cleo Sylvester of Detroit, Michigan, and two brothers, Art of Gettysburg, S. D.,and Nels of Wilkes Barre, Penn., besides a host of other relatives and close friends.
His father and mother and two sisters and his former wife, preceded him in death.
The American Legion assisted with the funeral services. Burial was made in the Austin cemetery.
