Clifford attended the Gay Street School in Phoenixville, then the Phoenixville High School (class of 1951). While not initially destined for college, with the help of one of his teachers and a scholarship, he attended and graduated from the Drexel Institute of Technology with a degree in electrical engineering. He worked for the Burroughs Corporation and its successors for nearly 40 years, during which time he patented over 20 designs. He married Elizabeth Coulter in 1951 and raised three children.
He was an amateur astronomer and an amateur radio enthusiast (call sign W3NNL), and a member of the Amateur Radio Relay League for 62 years.
He believed in "living simply so others may simply live." He died suddenly on 22 April 2009 of an aggressive cancer. He was missed by many adoring friends and family members.
