Helen L. Althouse Gamble, 93, of Winona, passed away Saturday morning at the home of her daughter Ruth Harsh. She was born Oct. 1, 1913, in Salem, Ohio, the daughter of the late Homer and Myrtle Forney Stackhouse. She was a 1931 graduate of Salem High School. She was a member of the Winona Friends Church. She served on the Flax Scutching Committee for Winona and was in charge of the quilt displays. She had worked on over 600 quilts in her lifetime. She enjoyed her family, quilting and cross-stitching.
Her first husband was Elmer "Nick" Althouse, whom she married Dec. 14, 1932. They operated the family farm until his death on Oct. 14, 1953. She worked for Jake Gerber, New Garden, Ohio, and Winona Frozen Foods. She married Carl S. Gamble on April 18, 1970. He died April 16, 1997.
She is survived by three sons, the Rev. William Glenn (Donna) Althouse of Marysville, Ohio, and Homer Lee (Marilyn) Althouse and Earl (Robin) Althouse, both of Winona; two daughters, Lois (William) McCormick of Salem and Ruth (Earl) Harsh of Salem; three stepsons, Richard Gamble of Lisbon, David (Crystal) Gamble of Wellsville, and John (Alice) Gamble of Winona; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Gertrude Walton and Alta Mae Althouse; a stepson, Kenneth Gamble; a stepdaughter, Carlene Plank; two great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Winona Friends Church with the Rev. Stephen Savage officiating. Interment will be in Woodsdale Cemetery. Calling hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Stark Memorial Funeral Home in Salem. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
