In Memoriam: Conley J. Biddle 1907-2006 PDG Conley J. Biddle Governor, Rotary International District 6000, 1978-79 Rev. Conley J. Biddle, 93, died Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at Kavanagh House. A memorial service was held for Rev. Biddle at West Des Moines Christian Church on Friday, June 30, at 10 a.m. with visitation one hour prior. Burial was at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines. Conley was born Sept. 6, 1907, in Bondurant, Iowa, to Julius William and Rose Ella Stakey Biddle. Rev. Biddle was an ordained minister of the Christian church, Disciples of Christ. He was a graduate of Drake University and the Drake Divinity School. He served for 45 years in the ministry of Christian churches, Disciples of Christ in Kellerton, Coggon, Marian, Altoona, Guthrie Center, Fort Dodge, Perry and West Des Moines. During his ministry in Perry and West Des Moines, he led in the construction of new church buildings. Rev. Biddle served the Christian Church of Iowa as a District Secretary and for 25 years he served as a member of the State Board of the Iowa Christian Churches. He served as President of the Iowa Christian Churches Ministers Association and as the President of the Iowa Christian Churches State Conventions. He served for 15 years as the Dean of Summer Youth Conferences for the Christian churches in five Midwestern states. He also served for three years as the president of the Drake University Divinity School National Alumni Association. Rev. Biddle was the author of four published books. He was a past president of the West Des Moines Rotary Club and a Past District Governor of Rotary International District 600. He was a 50-year Mason and served in the Blue Lodge, the York Rite, the Consistory and the Shrine. Rev. Biddle was married to Chloris Fay Keller on Sept. 10, 1927, and together they had a daughter, Alice Elaine Biddle, and a son, Robert Conley Biddle. Conley and Chloris were married 45 years. Their son Robert died Oct. 11, 1972, at the age of 37. His wife, Chloris, died on Oct. 23, 1972, and his daughter, Alice Elaine, died on Sept. 12, 1980. On June 28, 1974, Rev. Biddle was married to Vera Marriott Biddle. Rev. Biddle was preceded in death by his former wife, Chloris, his two children, Robert and Alice Elaine, his parents, two brothers, Walter and Mark, and two sisters, Alice and Bertha. His wife Vera died on Dec. 21, 2004. Rev. Biddle is survived by his daughter-in-law, Sharon Biddle of Urbandale, five grandchildren, Mrs. Debbie Winningham and husband Rick, Ms. Marcy Waggoner and Alan Conley Tibbetts of Texas, Ms. Kim Biddle and Mr. David Biddle of California, six great-grandchildren, Nicole and Tiffany Winningham and Jordan Tibbetts of Texas, Brian Johnston of Kansas and Brandon Perry and Randi Heywood of Des Moines.
