Clement N. Bassett was born about 1808, in New York, perhaps in Lewis county but probably in Gorham, Ontario county where his family was residing in 1810, He was the third child of Fortunatus and Sybil (Bacon) Bassett. In September 1815 Clement's mother died ten days after giving birth to twins John and Sybil. In February 1818 Clement's paternal grandmother, Sarah Bassett, died and his father Fortunatus decided to move to Ohio with part of his family. Fortunatus left Clement and his younger brother Allen with Fortunatus' older brother William Bassett to raise while Fortunatus took his oldest son William and daughters Sarah and Abigail to Hamilton county, Ohio where his cousin resided. Fortunatas died in Hamilton county, Ohio in August 1819 at the age of 44.
Clement and his brother Allen were raised by his uncle William and aunt Anna (Blair) Bassett and their family in Yates county, New York. In December 1830 Clement N. Bassett was enrolled as a freshman at Hamilton College in Clinton, Oneida Co., New York. He was studying for the ministry but apparently did not graduate with his Class of 1834. After attending Hamilton College Clement went to Selma, Alabama where he practiced law before moving to Texas. Clement had "a fine education and was the master of six languages." Frank A. Johnson, A History of Texas and Texans, Vol. III (Chicago and New York: The American Historical Society, 1914) at p. 1542.
In 1836 Clement Bassett came to Texas. He married Julia Maria Lee Beale on January 8, 1839 in Lynchburg, Harrisburg (later Harris) county, Texas. Their marriage notice appeared in the Telegraph and Texas Register newspaper, published in Houston, Texas, Vol. 4, No. 29, Ed. 1, on Wednesday, January 16, 1839:
