CIVIL WAR VETERAN......... James was the son of James Sullivan Davis and Parintha (Lawrence) Davis. He was the 8th child of nine being born to James and Parintha. When the Civil War broke out,James and a close fried ran off and joined the 19th ILLINOIS INFANTRY REGIMENT. This was a Zouave Regiment, which probably made it even more exciting for these two young boys. About one year later,heart breaking news arrived that James had been shot and killed by a Confederate scout just east of Tuscumbia. Army records show that James died that same day from his wounds in the regimental hospital. His mother Parintha claimed she saw James in his uniform on the front porch from her bedroom and ran out to greet him.(This was BEFORE they received word James had been killed.) Little did she know that at that time,her beloved son had passed away in Alabama.Perhaps James came home one last time to say goodbye...
