She was born October 13, 1921 in Iredell County, and was the daughter of the late Robert Homer and Ada Arthur Westmoreland. After graduating from Troutman High School, she was employed in the office of Mooresville Mills for several years. In 1946 she married Joseph Quinton Atwell, who preceded her in death on August 20, 1994.
After leaving the Mooresville area, the Atwells lived in Rocky Mount for 18 years and then in Hillsboro for 18 years. While in both Rocky Mount and Hillsboro, Mrs. Atwell was employed by the county educational system from which she retired in 1986. Following their retirement she and her husband moved back to their native Iredell County and made their home in Statesville.
Always being a faithful Episcopalian, she soon became very active in the ministry of the Trinity Episcopal Church where she was a member of the Altar Guild, the choir, and the Bible study group. Also, she was active in the Statesville Newcomers Club, serving as secretary until her health forced her to resign. After her husband's death, she was also an active member of the community-wide Organization for Widowed Persons. During Marie's illness she was surrounded by the love and care of her family and friends who sustained her with their visits, prayers, gifts of food and word of comfort. God bless you all and keep you in His care.
She is survived by one son Robert Sage Atwell and his wife Dr. Phyllis Atwell, of Banner Elk; two daughters, Mrs. Carol Atwell Jackson and her husband, Captain Frederick Jackson, of Orlando, FL, and Mrs. Joanne Atwell Smith and her husband, Raymond Bernie Smith of Greensboro; and five grandchildren, Rebecca, Leah, Elaine and Elizabeth Atwell of Banner Elk, and Katie Marie Smith of Greensboro. Also three brothers survive, Ray H. Westmoreland and Glenn W. Westmorelnd of Statesville and Robert Clyde Westmoreland of New Port.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she is preceded in death by one brother, J. Homer Westmoreland, and one sister, Rachael B. Westmoreland.
