Carrie was born to Lewis and Mary Ellen (Paine) Britton in Blackberry Township, Kane County. She graduated from Elgin High School June 13, 1890.

When Carrie died of typhoid fever, her family was devastated. Her obituary in "Every Saturday" December 19, 1891 stated, "…She was a bright and popular girl, whose sudden death falls like a blight on the spirits of her family and large circle of schoolmates and young friends."

Carrie is buried in Bluff City Cemetery, Elgin, Illinois, with her parents even though her name appears on the monument with her grandmother Fanny Britton in Greenwood Cemetery.
