Emma was the only child born to the marriage of John Monroe HARDAGE and Mathilda BRAY. Her parents were married in Arkadelphia, Clark County, Arkansas, 22 January 1885. Mathilda died shortly after Emma was born and John married Nora SANDERS, 7 December 1890, in Bismarck. The family is found in Bismarck, Hot Spring County, Arkansas in the 1900 Census. In the 1910 Census, Emma is living with her father's sister and husband, Sylvanus and Mollie Seay, in Hot Springs, Garland Co., Arkansas. Emma is listed as a school teacher, and she worked in her aunt's millinery store. Also in 1910, her father and his new family have moved to Bryan County, Oklahoma Township 8.
On 24 February 1915, Emma married Henry Walter "Walt" FENTER in Hot Springs, Garland County, Arkansas. Walt had moved to Portland, Oregon, found a job and went back to Arkansas to marry Emma. After the ceremony, the couple moved to Portland, Oregon. Soon after arriving, Emma and Walt moved into a small house on Omaha Avenue. They lived in this small house and built a two story home next door, which was finished about 1927.
Emma was tall, loved to cook, and usually wasn't far from a cup of coffee. One of the family favorites was her German chocolate cake. Emma and Walt had one son, Eugene, born in Portland in 1920. Before Emma moved to Oregon, her family attended the Baptist church. When she moved to Portland, she attended a couple of Baptist churches. One was the First Baptist Church, in downtown Portland, also called "White Temple," and another nearer her home in North Portland.
Emma became a widow in August 1941. Walt died while he was away on business in Aberdeen, Washington. He was a lumber inspector for the railroad.
Shortly before her death, Emma was placed in the Victoria Nursing Home on SE Division, where she died of Cancer.
