The Dalles (Oregon) Weekly Chronicle, Wednesday, August 15, 1900.
"The 7-months-old girl baby of William CATES, of this city, died at its parents' home yesterday afternoon. The little one was troubled for some time with an attack of gastro-entiritis, and although the best medical practitioners in the city were called, they could do nothing to save the little sufferer. The funeral took place from the family residence at 5 o'clock this afternoon."
Pearl CATES is found on the 1900 Oregon Census, East Dalles Precinct, The Dalles City, E.D. 141, S.D. 22, Sheet 6B, Dwelling 118, Family 123. The information shows she is the last child of 6 listed as living with parents William and Adaline CATES. Pearl is age 3 months, born in Oregon Feb. 1900. Her siblings were listed as, brother John (age 16, born in Montana, Sept. 1883), brother Jessie (age 13, born in Idaho, Dec. 1886), brother Earl (age 6, born in Oregon, July 1893), sister Addie (age 3, born in Oregon, June 1896), brother Viven (age 1, born in Oregon, Aug. 1898).
Pearl's father, was William CATES, age 44, born in Oregon, July 1855, is listed as a day laborer, married 19 years. Her mother was Adaline CATES, age 34, born in Iowa, Nov 1865, married 19 years, no occupation listed. Adaline said she had given birth to 8 children and 6 were still living.
Pearl was age 6 months and 1 day old when she died. She is buried in one of the graves in an 8 grave plot in the G.A.R. section of the Odd Fellows Cemetery. The other 7 graves in this plot contain members of William Henry and Adaline Cinderella STEEL(E) family. As a STEEL(E) family researcher, I haven't found any connection between the two families. My uncle Vern CAMPBELL told me that William Henry STEEL(E) gave the CATES family one of the graves in his family plot so the CATES family could bury their infant daughter.
Research Note: The 1910 Oregon Census shows William A. and Adaline CATES have moved to Echo Precinct, Umatilla County, and have 3 children with them, Earl L., Ada R., and Vivian. The other two boys, John R. CATES and Jess W. CATES are both married and living in Falls Precinct, Hood River County. Additional information can be found on the CATES family ancestors at The Dalles-Wasco County Library, in The Dalles, Oregon. See biographical information on Daniel L. CATES, the brother of William A. CATES.
