Arlene Geraldine STEELE was born to William Henry STEELE [STEEL] and Adaline Cinderella COOK [KOCH], 29 March 1886, in The Dalles, Wasco County, Oregon. She was the 7th and last known child born to this couple.
Arlene's parents were married in Irving, Marshall County, Kansas, 6 November 1864. In the Spring of 1871, the family moved from Kansas to California. About 1876, or 1877, the family moved to Wasco County, Oregon. Arlene's siblings were Andrew Louis, Mary Caroline, Ruth Genevia, and Adaline Willimine, all born in Kansas, and William Thomas and Franklin Bland, both born in California.
Arlene was also known as Arlie. Her first name has also been found spelled Arline. She is first found in the 1900 census in the East Dalles Precinct, Wasco County, Oregon, with her parents. She is listed as Arllie, age 14, born March 1886, in Oregon, and attending school.
On 4 June 1906, her mother died, and on 30 September 1906 Arlie married her 2nd cousin, John Sanford Campbell. John and Arlene spent most of their marriage in Northeastern Washington, living in counties of Stevens and Spokane. They were also reported as living a short time in Northern Idaho. [Their son, Vernon, always said he was born in Meadow Creek, Idaho, but his birth certificate showed him born in Spokane.] This marriage ended in divorce, in Wasco County, Oregon, March 1925, and Arlene never married again. Eight children were born to John and Arlene, but only 5 lived to majority. One child, Norma LaVaughn [also spelled Lavon], lived about 10 months, born and died in 1909. Two other daughters were stillborn. One daughter was known to the family as "Little" Eva, stillborn 30 September 1916, and the other daughter, listed as Infant Campbell on the death certificate, stillborn 30 October 1917. The children living to majority were Vernon Wayne, Lela May, Franklin Merle, Claude Henry and Evelyn Irene. [Lela later changed her name to Dolores Lela, sometime after 1930. She died in Concord, California, October 1942.]
Arlene returned to live in The Dalles, a short time after the 1920 census. She moved into the Steele family home, at the present address of 1001 East 9th. She took a job as a maid, at the Bank Hotel, to support herself and children, and worked there until she retired. Arlene continued to live at this address until her death, on 7 November 1961.
Arlene was survived by 3 sons, Vernon W. Campbell and Claude H. Campbell, of The Dalles; F. Merle Campbell, Sr., of Boring, Oregon, and one daughter, Evelyn I. Fenter, of Portland; 1 brother, Frank B. Steel of Baker, Oregon; 6 grandchildren; three great grandchildren.
Funeral services held at Spencer & Libby Memorial Chapel, Interment at Odd Fellows Cemetery, The Dalles, Oregon.
