Ronald the son of Sherman L.Adkins and Anna Adkins enlisted in the US Marine Corps on February 8, 1968 in Omaha NE. He arrived in Vietnam on July 20, and was assigned to Company L, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
While making an uncovered movement on operation Sussex Bay to establish blocking positions Company M became heavily engaged with an enemy force just north of Da Hoa village in an area known to Marines as Dodge City. The enemy fire confronted the Marines from three fronts resulting in several casualties and slowed the units advance.
Company L was immediately committed in support of the embattled Marines facing from the well-equipped and fortified NVA force. Intense automatic weapons fire, grenades and sporadic mortar fire inflicted the heaviest casualties on the Marine lead elements in the early contact with the NVA. Tanks were brought in for support as well as additional units, air and artillery support was used throughout the day and into the night. Losses for the Marines units were nine killed in action with many wounded, Company L took the bulk of the casualties, and one of the men who died was PFC Adkins from wounds sustained from hostile automatic weapons fire.
