Accidental Shooting
A sad case of accidental shooting took place last Thursday three miles east of Kirwin, which resulted in one of Mr. Andrews' boys losing his life. Mr. and Mrs. Andrews were both away from home, and the two boys, Charles and George, aged 11 and 13, concluded they would do a little shooting with an old double-barreled pistol which Mr. Andrews had, and which had one barrel loaded for some three years past. The two boys took the pistol and some caps to the field where they were husking corn. It seems that the two boys had but three caps, and Charles snapped the first cap on the loaded barrel of the pistol, and it failed to ignite the powder. George then took the pistol and endeavored to fire the same, and it still refused to go off. Charles again took the pistol and snapped the last cap, which again refused to fire, and he then changed the pistol into his left hand, and George concluded to try the caps again which had been thrown to the ground as fast as they were used, Charles claiming that the caps would certainly fire the pistol off. George, who had a sore finger on his right hand, put that hand in his pocket and was hunting for the caps with his left, and when he raised up, the pistol, uncocked and uncapped, fired, striking George in the forehead immediately over the left eye, literally tearing off the top of his skull. Charles then ran to the house and told his sister who immediately reported the accident to his father and going to the place he found his son George a corpse. The burial took place last Saturday forenoon and was attended by a large number of people. Mr. and Mrs. Andrews, who are old residents and very highly respected, have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement.
