Orley Avon Gilreath entered the US Navy from Detroit, MI on 27 September 1943. After Boot Camp, Orley was shipped to Pearl Harbor where he boarded the battleship, USS Mississippi. Involved in a number of landings in the Pacific theater, the Mississippi played a part in the liberation of the Philippines. Most notable was the sinking of the Japanese battleship YAMASHORO on 26 October 1944.
By 12 December 1944, Orley was transferred to the US Navy Hospital and then to the US for "Treatment and further Disposition".
