Molly was the mount of Colonel Allen L. Fahnestock, the first company commander of Co. I of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry and the Commanding Officer of the 86th Illinois the last year of the war. She carried Col. Fanestock during the last few months of 1864 though the end of the war. Molly was a mare. Col. Fahnestock purchased her from a Lieutenant in the Mounted Infantry in Chattanooga, Tennessee while the 86th was based in the area in late 1864. Molly carried Col. Fahnestock for the remainder of the war, all the way to Washington City (Now D.C.). After the war, Col. Fahnestock kept Molly on his brother Jacob Fahnestock's farm on Copperas Creek in Peoria County, near Glasford and Molly died there a number of years after the war and was buried there on the farm.
