Rev William M Anderson, D.D. of the Geneseo-Avon Road, died Sunday , Feb 15, at Strong Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Anderson was born near York, attended Westminster College, from which he graduated in 1890, and there years later finished theological training at the Alleghany Seminary. He was ordained to the ministry by Westmoreland Presbytery, June 20, 1893, and went to Philadelphia North Church in 1895, where he was minister until he retired in 1948, a period of 53 years.
Dr. Anderson was very active in church work, besides his parish work, and through his guidance and efforts many new churches were established. He was moderator of the General Assembly in 1918. He was a pioneer in the Corning United Presbyterian Colony, in beautiful Lehigh country, and it was here that many of the outstanding projects of the United Presbyterian Church had their inception.
He was the leader in reclaiming and rebuilding of the Oratorio Shrine in Lancaster County, where the Presbyterian church had its beginning in America. That shrine today is what it is because Dr. Anderson made it so.
Not only was he strong in Home Mission endeavor, but he has been a member of the Foreign Mission Board since 1899 and for many years served as president of the board.
Since Dr. Anderson's retirement he and Mrs. Anderson have lived at "Hickory Switch" on the Geneseo-Avon Road, where he has spent most of his time growing flowers and vegetables , which he loved to give to all his neighbors, and carrying on an extensive correspondence. He was a friend in need to all in trouble.
Dr. Anderson leaves his wife, Maud; a brother, James Anderson of Avon; and several nieces and nephews.
