Born Takeo Furukawa on March 15, 1883 in Tottori, Japan. As a young man, Takeo attended Meiji Gakuin in Shirokane, Tokyo, Japan. He graduated Futsu-Gakubu or high school in 1902 and Koutou-Gakubu or liberal arts and theology in 1905 from Meiji Gakuin.
Also in 1905, Takeo immigrated to the United States, arriving in Seattle in June on the Kanagawa Maru. Later that year he moved to Indianapolis with the intention to further his education at Butler University. It's then that he began to go by the name 'Frank Flucawa'.
Frank worked in service jobs to support himself and volunteered at several missions to feed his soul. It was at a mission that Frank met his future wife Grace Osborne, a fellow volunteer. Frank and Grace married on December 30, 1912. Frank and Grace had a small farm near E. 16th Street and Pleasant Run Parkway where they raised poultry, vegetables and had a charming ornamental garden.
When the U.S. became involved in WWII, Frank was required to register with the local sheriff. It was during this time that Frank and Grace moved to New Castle and became Quakers. They were both active in organizing local vegetable gardens, Red Cross fund raisers and writing regularly to their nephews serving overseas. They continued to raise poultry but also began operating a commercial flower garden. First at Cherry Street and Hawthorne Road, but eventually expanding to a larger property on South Memorial Drive.
Sadly, in November 1954 Grace passed away and Frank lost his partner in life of nearly 42 years. Frank carried on as best he could, he was well past the age when many men retire, but that was not his nature. Finally, in 1968, at the age of 85 he sold his property and retired. He lived a quiet life and passed peacefully from this world to his reward on May 29, 1974 at the age of 91.
