Hazel was born in the South Bennett Community near Goldthwaite in Mills County on July 4th, 1911, to Ernest Addison and Della Myrtle Westfall Tyson. She was the eldest of their five daughters. Her family farmed and ranched and lived on various properties, including the Williams Ranch, the Mullins Ranch, and the C-Bar Ranch. She attended school in Goldthwaite and Scallorn. Hazel married C. H. Black on April 7th, 1927 in Goldthwaite. They were the parents of three children: Jane Black Turman Lacey (spouse-Leo Lacey Jr.), Chance Huntis Black III, and Charles Layton Black (spouse-Thresa). Hazel was generous to a fault with her time, talent, possessions, hospitality, encouraging words and love. She taught Bible school classes for 51 years and was delighted that 4 young men she taught in the Baptist Church in Goldthwaite became preachers of the Gospel. Her grandparents were William R. and Mary A. Westfall and Jeptha M. and Bettie E. Tyson. She had three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. In liew of flowers, memorials may be given to the Hazel Tyson Black Memorial Scholarship for Mills County Students at Howard Payne University, Brownwood, Texas.

Note: Hazel was buried in a private-family-only simple service on a cold windy day in November 2010; a memorial service followed in the First Baptist Church in Goldthwaite with Brother Doug Holtzclaw officiating. There were hundreds in attendance.
