Joseph Hoppe, 77, a resident of Pacific for fifty-four years, died in the St. Louis County Hospital at 9:00 p.m. Sunday September 18th. He had been in the hospital two weeks prior to his death.
Mr. Hoppe was born in Illinois, moved to House Springs in early childhood, where he lived until he was twenty-three and then came to Pacific, where he spent the remainder of his life.
His long white beard and gentle manners endeared him in the hearts of the children of this area. He was affectionately known by them as "Santa Claus".
Funeral Services were conducted from the Thiebes Funeral Home at 2:00 o'clock, Tuesday afternoon. Rev. Carl Fritsch officiated. Burial was in the Pacific Cemetery.
Mr. Hoppe is survived by three sons and five daughters: John Hoppe of St. Louis, Charles Hoppe of Pacific, Louis Hoppe of Gray Summit, Mabel Stoker of Valley Park, Emma Schulze of Kirkwood, Minnie Meyer of Villa Ridge, Julia Manion of Pacific and Viola Higgins of Pacific: twenty-three grandchildren and one great grandchild: one sister Mrs. Minnie Lonne, Allison, Colo; one brother John Hoppe, Chester, Illinois.
