Lemuel Cain was born in Amite County, Mississippi to Archibald W.Cain and Julia Ann Cox Cain. When he was a child, the family removed to Caldwell Parish, Louisiana. During the Civil War, Lemuel served in the Third Louisiana Infantry. He was present at the surrender of Vicksburg. After the war, Lemuel married Mary Jane East, daughter of Tarlton and Mary Jane East. The family came from Panola County Texas about 1894 to Indian Territory Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma which later became Jefferson County. The trail from Panola County had been made earlier by cousins who had gone toward Indian Territory. Children of the couple were William Eugene, Charles Quantrelle, Floyd Vaughn, Alda Ella, Freddie Sion, Mary Lila, and Carl Crawford Cain.
