Marlyn was the son of Howard Wilson Barger and Helen Clara Anderson Barger. He was born at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD. He attended Trinity Parochial School, Bloomfield and graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1957. He served in the U. S. Army from Sept. 1957 through Sept. 1960.
He was married to Mary Bruns at St. Andrew's Catholic Church on Jan. 4, 1964 at Bloomfield. They were the parents of two sons, Todd and Troy. Marlyn grew up in the Bloomfield area helping his father and brother with the family farm. After his Army service he farmed east of Bloomfield from 1960 to 1986. Then he worked as a heavy equipment operator until Nov. 2005. Marlyn enjoyed his trips to the local coffee shop but his favorite activity was time spent with his grandchildren.
Marlyn was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Bloomfield and VFW Post 4996 in Bloomfield.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; his two sons and their wives, Todd and Colleen Barger of Aurora and Troy and Sheila Barger of Kearney; four grandchildren, Brian, Brendon and Bryce of Aurora and Zoey of Kearney; a step-granddaughter, Mattie of Kearney; his mother, Helen Barger of Mission, TX; a brother and his wife, Melvin and Sandra Barger of Bloomfield; and two sisters, Audrey Lowin and her husband, Kenneth of Cedar Falls, IA and Margret Ann Barger of Mission, TX.
He was preceded in death by his father, Howard Barger in 1996.
Visitation for Marlyn was on Friday, Jan. 6, 2005 from 4 to 8 pm at St. Andrew's Church with a wake at 7:30 pm. Funeral services were at St. Andrew's at 10:30 am Saturday with burial in Bloomfield Cemetery. Brockhaus Funeral Home of Bloomfield was in charge of arrangements.
