COMANCHE -- Roy William Brannan Jr., 69, longtime businessman and civic leader, died Thursday in a local hospital after a sudden illness.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Comanche First Baptist Church with Dr. Van Christian and the Rev. Sam Randolph officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, directed by Hall & Sons Funeral Home.

Mr. Brannan was born in De Leon and was a lifelong Comanche resident. He graduated from Tarleton State and Howard Payne universities and married Reitha Thomas in 1950 in Wickett. He was a partner in Comanche Wholesale Grocery for 22 years and managed Comanche Higginbothans Brothers and Co. Store for 12 years. He also was the comptroller of Ball Cattle Co. for six years. He opened Brannan Enterprises and Construction Co. and Accounting Services in 1990. He was the Democratic Party chairman for Comanche County and was a president of the chamber of commerce, Comanche Jaycees, Comanche County Appraisal District board, United Way, Comanche Cemetery Association and Evening Lions Club. He served as vice president of the Texas Jaycees. He was a director of the Comanche County Museum and was a member of the Selective Services committee and Masonic Lodge 481. He was named to Who's Who in Texas in 1968. He was a longtime deacon and, for 30 years, Sunday school superintendent at First Baptist Church and also was a member of the building committee.

Survivors include his wife, of Comanche; two sons, William Thomas "Bill" Brannan of Lubbock and Gary Paul Brannan of Clyde; one daughter, Cynthia "Cindy" Ann Brannan of Portland; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church or a favorite charity.

Visitation will be from 6-7:30 p.m. today in the funeral home.
