Jack Bowen, 77, of Scio went to be with the Lord Monday. He passed away at home with his wife and family present.

He was born in Banner, Va., the son of Avery C. and Dovie (Sutherland) Bowen Sr. The Bowen family moved to Sandy in 1940. In 1942, they moved to Talbot, where Jack attended school in Talbot and Jefferson.

Jack joined the U.S. Navy in 1947 and served four years. His tour of duty included Japan, the Philippines and Guam. He was with the Naval Air Force stationed in Guam.

Jack worked for U.S. West Communications for 28 years until retiring.

He lived in Bend for several years before moving to Scio in 1989, where he made his home until his death.

Jack married Juanita Turner-Simmons in 1993.

He was an avid horseman, loved reading and watching yellow finches feed. He loved to fish when he was able. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his passion.

Jack is survived by wife Juanita Bowen; children Linda Sobala and husband Gary, Diane Combs and husband John, Theresa Bowen and husband Peter, Daniel Bowen and Bill Bowen; stepdaughters Jodi Pickett and husband Tom and Lori Cooper and husband Steve; grandchildren Angie Werder and husband Mark, Kirsten Kapu and husband Ed, Kim Guthrie and husband Harold and Stephanie Rinehart and husband Richard; stepgrandchildren Jon Pickett and wife Alyssa, Kristin Cooper, Andrew Cooper, Ryan Pickett, Stefani Pickett and Braden Cooper; great-grandchildren Amanda Guthrie, Carson Werder, Brooklynn Werder, Devin Rinehart, Kolbe Rinehart, Mikayla Rinehart, Kekoa Kapu and Brock Pickett; sisters Bernice McClellan and Theresa Sims and husband Darrel; several nieces and nephews; special great-nephew Jadan Rotton; and many special friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son David Bowen, and brothers Cecil Bowen, Clifford Bowen and Fred Bowen.

Jack was a member of the Scio Baptist Church, where his service will be Friday.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Scio Baptist Church or Samaritan Evergreen Hospice in care of Fisher Funeral Home, 306 Washington St. S.W., Albany, OR 97321 (
