William Davis Armstrong was born in Platte County, Missouri, January 22, 1842, and died at Dunham, Kansas, January 22, 1913, aged 71 years. With his parents, he moved to Stark County, IL, where four sisters and one brother survive him. Leaving his home at the age of 14 years, he entered the government employ at Kansas City, driving government teams from Kansas City to San Antonio, Texas over the old Santa Fe Trail. He later went to Oregon and the Northwest. Returning about the year 1870, he entered the employ of Albert Crane of Chicago in Colorado and continued work on the widely-known Crane's Ranch, first known as Durham Park. When the cattle business was given up by Mr. Crane and the ranch was divided into farms, he rented some of the land and became a farmer.

On October 11, 1875, he married Mrs. Margaret Platt. To this union were born four boys, the oldest, Clarence died at the age of 11 months; the other three, William, Thomas and Walter are still living. Mrs. Armstrong died November 22, 1895. Mr. Armstrong married Mrs. Martha Swift March 10, 1897, to which union was born one girl, Margaret Luella, who with her mother, survives the father. Mr. Armstrong lived in Missouri for about 5 years in the employ of his old friend, Mr. Crane.

Moving back to Marion County, he bought a farm on the Cottonwood River, which he later sold, moving to Durham. He built the Valley Hotel property which as proprietor, he conducted to the time of his death. Sunday night, January 12, Mr. Armstrong was stricken with paralysis in the right side of his entire body; a few days following he seemed to improve, but succumbed January 22, his 71st birthday.

The funeral was held in Durham, Sunday, at 2 p.m., and was largely attended by relatives and friends. C. C. Platt of Jennings, OK and Harriet Luse of Great Bend, KS, son and daughter of his former wife, were in attendance. Many friends of the family from Ellinwood, Canton, Lost Springs, Marion and other places were in attendance. His body was taken to McPherson Cemetery for interment, by the side of his first wife.
