Birth: 1836
Death: Sep. 29, 1916

Company C 4th Alabama Infantry CSA.

Ossian Tigner (O. T.) Brown, was born to Dr. Charles Anderson Brown from Savannah, Georgia & Mary Mulkey Brown from Jones County, Georgia in about 1836.

A native of Georgia from Meriwether County, he served in the Confederate States Army (CSA); a soldier in Company C of the 4th Alabama Infantry Regiment, which was originally organized at Dalton, Georgia, on May 2, 1861.

He relocated to Texas, where he met and married Elizabeth Pauline Belvin in San Marcos, Hays County, Texas on November 13, 1877 in Hays County, Texas (probably in the San Marcos area). Elizabeth (Apr 1 1854 Aug 7 1935) was the daughter of a prominent local Methodist minister and educator, the Rev. R. H. Belvin and his wife, Caroline W. Mitchell Belvin.

Brown, a Civil War veteran and a former prisoner-of-war, became a successful San Marcos attorney and civic leader.

The Brown homestead was built in 1878 and purchased by O. T. & Elizabeth Belvin Brown in 1882. The family home is located at 716 Belvin Street (named for Elizabeth's father) in San Marcos and it remained in the family estate until 1967. A picture of the homestead can be viewed on Flickr, courtesy of Betty Harrison's photostream at:

Brown was also very involved in the Methodist Church in the San Marcos area.

O. T. & Elizabeth had four children this researcher has discovered, to-date:

Daughter - Caroline Belvin Brown (Aug 27 1878 Dec 22 1952)
m. Hugh Foley (Sep 28 1883 Jun 24 1937)
Daughter Mary Ossian Brown (Sep 2 1881 May 14 1966)

Daughter - Charlotte Woodmancy Brown (Sep 21 1884 Dec 16 1967)
m. Earl Clark Barkley (Aug 18 1890 Mar 5 1946)
Daughter Lillian Robert Brown (Sep 23 1888 Mar 12 1970)
m. J. Harris Moore (About 1887 - ?)

Ossian Tigner Brown passed away from Cerebral Hemorrhage in San Marcos, Hays, Texas on August 7, 1935, with Senility noted as a contributory cause of his death.

In viewing his death certificate, it is obvious there is some misinformation noted, as the parents listed for Ossian Tigner Brown (spelled Oesian Tigner Brown, it appears, on the certificate) are actually Elizabeth Pauline Belvin Brown's parents' names. This researcher has seen O. T.'s first name spelled many ways; however, two spellings seem to be prominent: Ossian and Oesian. It is believed that the correct spelling is "Ossian".

Informant listed on the certificate is his wife, Elizabeth (listed as Mrs. O. T. Brown San Marcos, Texas).

He was a great man who did a good many things that WERE good in his life. This memorial is to commerate his life and the good things he accomplished.
