John B. Kelly was the son of Lydia Griffing (1813-1846) and John C. Kelly (1812-1880). He left home at age 12 and learned the Butcher's trade. In 1861, at the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted with other young men from Luzerne County in Co. E of the 11th PA. Vols., a three month service unit. Later, in August, 1862, he joined with Co. M, 2d Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery and served with them until mustered out of the service in June 1865. He was married to Eliza T. Boil in 1866 and after her death in 1878, he married Angeline Sands in 1879. The couple moved to Chicago in 1883 and resided there until his death in 1927.
