Fred Sanders and Lucille Goodwin married in December of 1939.
It wasn't long until their firstborn, Tennie Jonell, was born on December 29, 1940.
Pop,as he was affectionately known, was a World War II Navy veteran. He was commissioned on May 8, 1944. He served on the U.S.S.Kenneth Whiting as a Chief Petty Officer Radarman. He was a member of the original crew which commissioned this ship. His ship fought battles in Saipan, Babelthaup, Ulithi,Kerama Retto, Okinawa, Sasebo, and Hong Kong. He was honorably discharged on January 8, 1946.
Upon returning from service, he and his family settled in New Albany, MS, where he farmed and worked wherever he could. He moved his growing family(Don born June 20, 1953 and Tana born June 8, 1954) to Memphis, TN, in 1957, to work as a postal clerk. Pop loved working so much that he actually held down two jobs, the second one with Ely-Walker in Memphis as a maintenance manager.
The family moved to Southaven,MS, in 1969. The fall of 1969 is when I met Don, and we began dating. We married in 1975.
Pop loved to go "home" to New Albany on weekends. They still had the old homeplace, which he started to remodel in anticipation of retiring there one day.
That was not to be. In the fall of 1977, Pop suffered a stroke which left him disabled and speech impaired. On June 16, 1978, he suffered a massive heart attack while in the hospital and died there. He was only 58 years old.
He left his wife of 38 years, Lucille, his children, Jonell Coker, Don Sanders, and Tana Tuttle and grandchildren, Kerry and Eddie Coker.
His son, Don, who was my husband, passed away on Aug. 13, 2013.
