Ralph's birth certificate shows he was born 8th of 8 children of Joseph Henry Ellingwood (1869-1943) and Isie Belle Robbins (1876-1916). Since Ralph's birth date corresponds with Isie's death date, Isie most likely died from birthing complications.

After Isie died her sister, Abigail Evelyn Robbins (1872-1956) & husband Albion L. Abbott (1867-1956) adopted Ralph.
