Beane, Wallace

Came to America in 1840 and lived on farms in different parts of the state of Illinois for ten years. Then came to St. Paul, Minnesota and engaged in hauling merchandise from that city to the frontier. In 1856 he went to the Chippewa agency, remained four years and came to Crow Wing, where he pre-empted land on which he lived till 1870. In the latter year he came to Brainerd taking a homestead about a mile and a half southwest of the village. Mr. Beane was a member of the board of County Commissioners at the time the county seat was changed from Crow Wing to Brainerd.       A young son of Wallace Beane, a mile and a half south of town, died last Monday morning, from the effects of an abdominal tumor. (Brainerd Tribune, 25 June 1881)

      Wallace Beane, residing about three miles south of town, lost a child from diphtheria last Wednesday morning. This is the third child Mr. Beane has lost during the past few months. (Brainerd Tribune, 03 December 1881)

      FOR SALE—On account of poor health I offer for sale the following described property to wit: An improved farm, lying about one mile southwest of the town of Brainerd, Crow Wing Co., Minn., containing about 192 acres, 35 acres of bottom land under cultivation, and about 5 acres of upland, also in a high state of cultivation; balance well timbered. Dwelling house, barn, granary and other out buildings. Good well of water, a living stream running through the farm. Good meadow attached to farm which will cut 100 tons of hay, also two span of horses, one pair of colts, two years old, two sets of harness, one wagon, one buggy, two pair of bobsleds, one seeder, three plows, two cultivators, one harrow, one mowing machine and horse rake. Also a farm lying eight miles from Brainerd, on Brainerd & Sauk Rapids R. R., containing about 140 acres, all fenced, 50 acres under cultivation, lying within fifty yards of Crow Wing station.

      Wallace Beane, probably the oldest settler in Crow Wing county, died suddenly of heart disease on Sunday evening at 8:15 p.m., at his residence on his farm two miles south of town, aged 67 years. Mr. Bean had been feeling as well as usual all day Sunday. He and Mrs. Beane retired about eight o'clock. A few minutes later Mrs. Beane was aroused by his struggles for breath, but by the time she arose and procured a light he had died. Dr. Reimestad, the coroner, was called and decided that he had died of heart disease and no inquest was necessary. The funeral services were held on Wednesday the 11th at the Episcopal church, Rev. Kite officiating. Deceased was born in Norfolk, England, in 1892 [sic] [1829]. He came to this country when eight years of age and lived a while in Illinois, but has resided for the last 45 years in Minnesota and in Crow Wing county. He had a farm adjoining Hole in the Day's at Crow Wing in 1862, during the Sioux massacres and a claim for indemnity for loss incurred in the massacres, amounting to $2,000, is about to be allowed by the government. Three children, Truman Beane, Mrs. Clara Baker, Mrs. Lulu Bell and his aged widow, all residents of this city, survive. (Brainerd Dispatch, 13 January 1899, p. 8, c. 6)
