John Barkley was the son of John and Phoebe (Rohrman) Barkley. He attended the University of South Dakota, Vermilion, majoring in Fine Arts. On his graduation day, 29 May 1950, he married Gloria McIntyre.

John and Gloria had the following children: Cheryl Ann, Alison Marie, and Bradley David.

Early in his career, John worked as an advertising artist for Minneapolis Honeywell and Gould, Brown, and Bickett. In January 1967 he was ordained as a minister of the Episcopal Church and served churches in South Dakota, Wyoming, and Nebraska.

John and Gloria moved to Kimball from Rawlins, Wyo. upon his retirement in 1992 and he continued to serve as an interim priest in Kimball and Sidney.

John's obituary notes that he was a member of the Kimball Lions Club and served as President in 1995-1996.

John is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Gloria; daughters Cheryl Merrihew of Ashby and Alison Davis of Hershey; son Brad Barkley of Northglenn, Colo.; sister Jean Schwarting of Ridgedale, Mo.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his parents, brother Don, and twin sister Joan.
