The first of four children born to George Thomas and Mary Etta (Chitwood) Armstrong of Logan Co AR, Clarence died of a ruptured appendix at the age of 9 yrs, 2 mos and 3 dys.
Here is a family story about Clarence's death from a fellow researcher. Although the story is not verified as yet, the source is reliable:
"After his father left the family, Clarence's mother Mary Etta farmed him out to her brother, Grundy Chitwood. Grundy lived in Prairie View, Logan Co AR. One morning, Clarence refused to get out of bed. His Uncle Grundy and Grundy's wife thought he was just trying to get out of the work they had for him. However, Clarence later died of a ruptured appendix. His mother Mary Etta would cry and say for years afterward, "My brother killed my son.""
