Third of seven children of Elizabeth Naugle and Robert Anderson. His parents and older sister Nancy Jane moved from Scioto County, Ohio in 1863 to Shawneetown, Illinois (Gallatin County), where Silas was born three years later.
When he was six, the family left Illinois on a 172 mile trip to Missouri. They settled on a farm near Campbell (Dunklin County), where Silas would grow up and remain the rest of his life.
By 1900, five of his siblings had died, leaving only Silas and his sister Leta Bell. He was living with his parents and sister in Union Township, Dunklin County, helping his father work their farm. His father died in 1901, his sister married William Bur Vincent in 1903, and his mother died in 1916. After his mother's death, he lived with his sister and brother-in-law and their three children and helped work their farm until his death in 1930.
