Ruth S. Widener wrote, "He worked on a newspaper in Leakesville, North Carolina, and is remembered by several of his older West Virginia relatives as he visited them frequently during his lifetime. He served as a private in Company A, Regiment, 21st Virginia Infantry. He enlisted June 20, 1861, at Richmond, Va. His age shown then as 34 years (GSA, NA&RS, Washington, D.C.) He died August 14, 1897, in Rockingham, North Carolina, and is buried in a rural cemetery there. Note: I checked the records in Raleigh, North Carolina, for information concerning him, but found nothing. However, I found the information as to his death and place of burial, by accident, from a list prepared by the WPA in 1934 when they conducted a project in that area."
