SENECA — A 19-year-old Clemson University sophomore who died in a Saturday car crash was following in his father's footsteps, attempting to obtain a degree from the family's beloved alma mater.

Mark Tanner Heniford died from a head injury when his 2001 Ford Expedition ran off the roadway about 9 p.m. and overturned on Seneca Creek Road, near the intersection with Airport Road, Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis said.

Heniford was a pre-business major, said Sandy Edge, who is the director of the Academic Advising Center at Clemson University's College of Business and Behavioral Science.

Edge is from North Myrtle Beach, where the Heniford family lives. He said his brother taught Mark Heniford at North Myrtle Beach High School. Heniford's father played football for Clemson in the 1970s.

When it was time for the Heniford children to go to college, their first choice was Clemson. Edge said he talked with the family when Mark's sister, Mary Katherine, was ready to enroll in her first semester of classes.

She is now a junior and is majoring in biological sciences. Mark followed his sister to Clemson but chose a major that he thought would be flexible, Edge said.

"They were Clemson orange, inside and outside," Edge said. "Everybody knew the Henifords and knew they were Clemson people. This is certainly a terrible loss."

Heniford was alone in the vehicle.

South Carolina Highway Patrol Cpl. Bryan McDougald said the crash occurred when the Expedition ran off the right shoulder of the road, crossed back over both lanes and then ran off the left side of the road.

The car flipped over. Heniford was not wearing his seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle, McDougald said.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the wreck, but Addis has said it appears accidental.
