Byron H. Capen Jr., 65, of 33 Groveland St., a 30-year groundskeeper at Smith College, died Monday at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton. He retired this month.
He worked previously for Hampden Specialty Products. Born in Amherst, he was a 1950 Amherst High School graduate, and a 10-year resident here. He attended the Christ United Methodist Church in Northampton, and belonged to the Swift River Historical Society in New Salem.
He leaves his wife, the former Norma L. Aldrich; a son, Donald A.; two daughters, Darlene M. Lewandowski and Deborah A. Iannoli, all of Easthampton; two sisters, Charlotte Burke of Chicopee, and Evelyn Crossman of Amherst; nine grandchildren, and a great-grandson.
The funeral is set Thursday morning at Mitchell Funeral Home, with the burial in Brookside Cemetery. Calling hours are this afternoon and evening, and memorial contributions may be made to the church at 271 Rocky Hill Road, Northampton, 01060.
Daughter, Debbie Capen, married Patrick Iannoli of Easthampton, MA. They have four sons, Patrick, Craig, Evan and Brent.
