Biography

On Friday September 12, 2014, Nils Alton Lindberg, at the age of 98, went to join his Lord and Savior, and his beloved wife Myra Lawson Lindberg. Myra and Alton had been married for 67 years. She preceded him in death nine years ago and he missed "his sweet Myra" every day they were apart. Together they had two children, Nancy Lindberg Nordwall (married to Bruce Nordwall) and Robert Alton Lindberg (married to Sammy Lindberg). They had six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild-with the second on the way.
Alton was born on March 28, 1916 in Skane, Sweden. In 1923 he immigrated to the United States, through Ellis Island, with his parents Andrew and Esther Lindberg. He also had two brothers. Egon who preceded him in death and a brother Alvin who resides in Arizona.
Alton is survived by his grandchildren Sherri Pingitore (Tony), Rob Nordwall (Joanne Hallmark), Douglas Nordwall (Tammy), Rob Lindberg (Karen), Andy Lindberg (Ida Marie), and Matt Lindberg (Kylie). Great grandchildren are Rachel Pingitore West (Brandyn), Sarah Pingitore Fielder (Travis), Anthony Pingitore (Molly), Ian Pingitore, Abbey Nordwall, Greta Nordwall, Robbie Lindberg, Erik Lindberg, Oskar Lindberg, and great-great grandchild Morgan Nils Fielder.
Alton proudly served in the US Navy from February 25, 1944 to February 8, 1946, and was the recipient of several World War II medals. He was on the first ship to arrive on Utah Beach on D-Day. His ship was the Port Director, directing boat traffic, troop beach landings and remained on the coast of France throughout the Invasion.
He spent his working career in the Grocery business. He started with his own store (Ray and Al's) on the corner of Sprague and Baker Sts. He then managed Pearson's Market and later became the General Manager of Jamestown Wholesale Grocers.
For over 50 years he served his community as one of the board members of the Jamestown Union Gospel Mission. He was also a devoted member, and served as Deacon, Chairman and Sunday School Teacher of the Hillcrest Baptist Church, of which he was the oldest living member at the time of his passing. He was also a Boy Scout Explorer leader of Troop 65 for over 25 years. In his earlier years he served on the American Red Cross Rescue Squad and was also active with The HUGO Fund.

In 1947, Alton and Myra built their family cottage at Loomis Point on Chautauqua Lake where they created life-long memories for their entire family and friends. This little red cottage is still the gathering spot for the many generations of his family.
Alton was a man of faith. He taught by example. He was a devoted husband, dad, papa, and friend. He had a dry sense of humor, an incredible memory, a strong moral and work ethic, and a heart filled with love. His memory will carry on in the hearts of all who knew him. He truly will be missed by many generations of lives he touched.
Calling hours will be at the Lind Funeral Home on Monday, September 15th from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. The funeral will be held at Hillcrest Baptist Church on Tuesday, September 16th at 11:00 AM.
