Capt. Eleazar Giles was the son of Samuel Giles and Elizabeth Sherman. Eleazar was one of eight children. He married Syrena Tibbetts on October 28, 1841 at Boothbay, Maine.
According to: "From the Revolution to the World War - The Shipping Days of Old Boothbay," George Wharton Rice, Published in 1938 by The New England History Press in collaboration with the Boothbay Region Historical Society, "Giles, Eleazer S (1816-1865) - In 1847 he was mate of brig Helen Maria of N. Yarmouth; commanded brigs Australia and Rainbow, and in 1864 a brig was launched at Wisc. for his command. The captain was a Freemason, and the vessel received the name Hiram Abiff. The following spring the brig arrived in New York with Captain Giles ailing, and he died there."
Although a gravestone exists at Wylie Cemetery, Eunice Knollin, daughter of Helen (Giles) Knollin, indicated to the author that Capt Eleazar was buried at sea and there is no body in the grave.
