Joseph Rodman Giles was the son of Eleazar Giles and Syrena Tibbetts. He married Hattie B. McFarland in Boothbay Harbor, Maine June 24, 1874. He and Hattie moved to Middlesex County, Massachusetts. For a time he was a seaman but by 1880 he was employed as a salesman. Their first child, Helen, was born in 1876. Hattie (McFarland) Giles died during or shortly after childbirth with a second child, Hattie B. Giles. The child survived, but was left mentally defective.
Joseph married an Emma R. Davis in Boston, Massachusetts on June 22, 1880. In 1905 Joseph and Emma moved to Boothbay, Maine, where Joseph bought the Charles Rush farm. He spent the rest of his life as a farmer.

Note: Helen Knollin & her daughter Eunice have indicated that Joseph was buried between his two wives at Wylie Cemetery, however no headstone now exists at the site, perhaps damaged & removed
