Birth: 1851
Bristol
Lincoln County
Maine, USA
Death: Feb. 19, 1879
Massachusetts, USA

Hattie B. McFarland was the daughter of John McFarland and Sarah Robbins. Her brothers were William, Reuben and Anson McFarland. Prior to her marriage to Joseph Rodman Giles she was a school teacher in Bristol, Lincoln County, Maine. She married Joseph on June 24, 1874 in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. Joseph was the son of Eleazer Giles, a sea captain.

Hattie's first child, Helen, was born in 1876 while Joseph and Hattie were living in Massachusetts, but during or shortly after the birth of her daughter Hattie B. Giles in 1879, Hattie B (McFarland) Giles passed away. The daughter survived, however, but was mentally defective and later institutionalized at the Massachusetts School for the Feeble Minded in Waltham, Massachusetts. Joseph remarried, eventually moving back to Boothbay Harbor, Maine. He is buried at Wylie Cemetery in Boothbay, Maine between his two wives, Hattie and Emma, however his headstone is no longer there.
